John Newbery Medal
The winners of annual awards given to authors for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Example: The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread by Kate DiCamillo.

Randolph Caldecott Medal
The winners of the annual awards given to artists who illustrate the most distinguished American picture books for children. Example: Flotsam by David Wiesner.

Coretta Scott King Award
Given to African American authors and illustrator for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions, the Coretta Scott King Book Award titles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream. Example: Remember: The Journey to School Integration by Toni Morrison.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award
The winners of the annual award for the best beginning readers. Example: Zelda and Ivy: The Runaways by Laura McGee Kvasnosky

Mildred L. Batchelder Award
The winners of the annual award for the best book for children originally published in another language and translated into English. Example: The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke.

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal
The winners of this annual award for the best informational (nonfiction) books. Example: Team Moon: How 400,000 People Landed Apollo 11 on the Moon by Catherine Thimmesh

Pura Belpré Award
The winners of this award given every two years to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
