Sydney Comstock
In August of 1930, as Florida State University professor, Comstock is sent to Antarctica to investigate rumors of a new species of penguin that lives on the Ross Sea and on the Ross Ice Shelf. Prof. Comstock is slight of build, wears glasses, and suffers from Raynaud's disease. Comstock is married and has 3 children, each of whom is in the gifted and talented program at the Tropicana Academy for Science and Math. Comstock loves seafood, though is allergic to some fish oils. The professor enjoys crossword puzzles and geography trivia, and once named all of the southern hemisphere's capitals, in reverse alphabetic order, simultaneously locating each one on a map. Ironically, during 20 years as Chairman of the Vertebrate Biology program, Comstock has seldom left campus, though the professor was once invited to Texas to research desert squid. Unbeknownst to many people, Comstock has a phobia of Penguins, but knows that this is a very important scientific study, and needs to overcome this irrational fear. To study these penguins, Comstock has signed on with Douglas Mawson on the ship Nimrod.
