The Research Road is an online tutorial which students
can use each time they have research needs. The six
sequential steps are loosely based on standard information
literacy models and guided by Bloom's Taxonomy.
Objectives
Students will be able to organize
their research using the six steps.
Students will be able to locate good,
accurate information sources, both print and electronic,
for their research needs.
Students will become familiar with
online research databases.
Students will learn when and how
to cite their sources.
Students will use information and
ideas effectively and responsibly.
Research Skills Scope & Sequence Six standards to help you and your
favorite librarian teach students essential, age-appropriate
research skills. These standards were created by educators
at seven independent schools in the Greater Boston
area.
State the student's task in terms
of a question or problem whenever possible. Assist
older students in developing their own thesis statement
or essential question.
Encourage students to use NoodleBib
and the online Fay
Citation Guide. Print copies of the
Citation Guide are available at the Fay Library.
Ask your students to share their
bibliographies with you on NoodleBib and
give them feedback about their sources as they work.
Ask a librarian if you'd like help with this.
Help students develop higher order
skills by requiring them to transform the information
they gather to create an original product. If data
can be defined as a simple fact, then:
Data + Meaning = Information
Information + Understanding = Knowledge
Knowledge + Experience = Learning
Designing the assignment so that
students must do more than rewrite the facts is
a strategy that also helps prevent plagiarism. See
Help for Teachers below.
Remind students to ask a librarian
when they need help. Librarians are great guides
to the online world as well as to the world of books!
