Is this web site a good source
for my research? If you have found a web site using
a search engine (like Google) and you're wondering
whether it's a good source for your research, you've
come to the right place to find out! Just answer the
questions below.
Click the blue Question/Information
buttons for more information.
Do you see the characters
"k12" in the URL?
Do you see the word "wiki"
in the URL?
Can you find the name of the
author or the organization responsible for the web
site? The name of the author or organization
name should be on the home page. Your search engine
may have directed you to a page within a web site
instead of its home page. Look for the HOME
link.
Is the author an expert on
the topic, or is the organization reputable? Look for an ABOUT
link on the page, which should give you information
about the author or organization. According to the
Oxford
English Dictionary, reputable means "Having
a good reputation; of good repute; estimable, honourable,
respectable." If you're not sure if the organization
is reputable, ask a parent, teacher, or librarian.
Is the web page a hoax or
a joke, or is it designed to sell something? A hoax is something intended to
deceive or to trick. Sometimes a web site may not
be what it appears to be. It may take some detective
work to determine the purpose of a web site.
Okay, if you've gotten this
far, you're ready for the final step! The final step is to fill out a
VERY BRIEF FORM to hand in with your
assignment or research paper. Yes,
I'm ready for the final step!
